Vibrating Spiral Elevators and Conveyors
Typical ApplicationsSpiral elevators are used across a range of industries because they can gently convey many types of materials, including granules, powders, pellets and fragile goods. Common applications include:- Food processing: Moving cereals, grains, candies and other delicate food products vertically between processing stages.
Enclosed, food-grade models meet USDA and GMP standards.
- Chemical & plastics: Conveying plastic pellets, polymers, powders and chemical granules; spiral elevators prevent material degradation and can be designed to cool or heat the product during processing.
- Pharmaceutical & nutraceutical: Transporting tablets, capsules and powders in a dust-free and sanitary environment; integrated heating or cooling helps maintain product integrity.
- Foundry & metallurgy: Elevating hot metal castings or sand while cooling them; high-temperature designs can handle materials up to 1500°F.
- Agriculture & feed:
Lifting animal feed, grains and seeds vertically to feed processing equipment. Spiral elevators’ gentle motion reduces breakage of fragile seeds. Sizing and Specification ConsiderationsWhen selecting or designing a vibrating spiral elevator, consider the following:
- Material characteristics:
Bulk density, particle size, temperature and fragility will determine the required diameter, vibration frequency and surface treatments. Sticky materials may require special flight coatings, while abrasive materials benefit from heavy-duty construction.
- Capacity and height:
Basic models lift up to 34 ft high at rates up to 28 tons per hour. Heavy-duty units can be built 11 ft in diameter and 60 ft tall, with high-temperature designs for materials up to 1500 °F. Compact elevators have diameters of 300–900 mm and capacities of 1–4 t/h.
- Direction of travel:
Vibrating spiral elevators can be designed to convey materials upwards or downwards depending on process needs.
-Motor mounting and control:
Choose top- or bottom-mounted motors based on space constraints and maintenance access. A variable-frequency drive allows adjustment of conveying speed and retention time.
- Thermal treatment requirements:
Determine whether the process requires heating, cooling, drying, coating or conditioning. Forced-air intakes, water-jacketed flights or static covers can be incorporated to meet these requirements.
Why Choose FS Fabrication Service Ltd for Vibrating Spiral Elevators?
At FS Fabrication Service Ltd, we design and manufacture bespoke vibrating equipment tailored to your process requirements.
Our vibrating spiral elevators combine vertical conveying with thermal processing, offering compact, efficient and reliable solutions for handling bulk solids.
Key benefits of working with us include:
- Custom engineering:
Each elevator is designed for your material, capacity and space requirements. Our engineers specify the correct diameter, height, vibration frequency and thermal features to achieve smooth conveying.
- High-quality fabrication:
We use robust materials and precision fabrication methods to ensure long service life and minimal maintenance. Our equipment can be built from mild steel or stainless steel and can be supplied with food-grade finishes or explosion-proof motors.
- Process integration:
We collaborate with your team to integrate the spiral elevator into your existing process line, whether you need vertical conveying, heating, cooling or a combination of functions.
Our solutions can elevate, lower or level materials at controlled feed rates.
Adding a vibrating spiral elevator from FS Fabrication Service Ltd to your production line can improve efficiency, reduce space requirements and provide gentle handling of your products.

What is a Vibrating Spiral Elevator? A vibrating spiral elevator also called a spiral conveyor or spiral elevator is a vertical conveyor that uses vibration to move bulk solids along a helical trough. Unlike belt-driven elevators, vibratory spiral elevators have no belts or chains; instead, two unbalanced motors create a micro-throw motion that lifts and twists the product at every pulse. The vibration forces the material to hop upward along the spiral path while gravity returns it to the trough, producing a gentle but continuous vertical conveying action. According to industry resources, spiral elevators can be supplied as open or enclosed systems; enclosed models prevent dust from escaping and keep contaminants out of the product stream while also allowing the material to be dried, heated or cooled during transport.
How Do They Work?
- Micro-throw motion: Unbalanced motors at the base or top of the elevator generate a controlled vibratory force. This forces the entire machine to perform a composite vibration a combination of horizontal circular motion and upward vertical motion. The material in the spiral trough is thrown forward and upward at a constant speed, then lands a little further up the incline. Repeated pulses gently move the product up or down the helical trough.
- Helical trough: The spiral trough wraps around a central support tube. It is typically fabricated from stainless or mild steel, and its flights may be jacketed or fitted with forced-air ducts to heat, cool or dry the product during conveying.
- Top- or bottom-mounted motors: Depending on space and service requirements, motors may be mounted at the top (lower inlet height) or the bottom (easier maintenance) of the elevator. A variable-frequency drive can adjust the vibration amplitude and frequency, allowing operators to control the retention time and feed rate.
- Customizable design: Spiral elevators are highly customizable. In addition to open/enclosed construction, they can be built in diameters ranging from 300–900 mm and heights up to 6 m (approx. 20 ft), while some heavy-duty units reach diameters of up to 11 ft and heights of 60 ft for large-scale installations. Units can handle capacities from 1-4 t/h in compact models to 28 t/h in larger industrial machines.
Key Benefits
- Compact footprint: Because the product travels vertically, spiral elevators occupy a small floor area. This makes them ideal for facilities where space is limited.
- Gentle handling: The micro-throw motion imparts controlled, low-stress energy to the product, allowing fragile materials—such as cereals, pharmaceutical powders or plastic pellets—to be conveyed without breakage.
- Versatile thermal processing: Spiral conveyors can dry, heat, cool or coat materials during conveying by incorporating forced-air intakes or jacketed flights. This multi-function capability reduces the need for separate process equipment and improves throughput.
- Clean and sanitary: Enclosed designs prevent dust emissions and protect the product from contamination. Many systems meet GMP standards, are easy to clean, and are suitable for food or pharmaceutical applications.
- Low maintenance: Vibrating spiral elevators have fewer moving parts than screw or belt conveyors, resulting in lower wear and maintenance costs. Simplicity of design contributes to long service life.
- Energy efficiency: The vibratory drive efficiently uses energy; combined with the small footprint, this often results in lower energy consumption compared with alternative vertical conveying solutions.
